My ASL and Deaf Resources

In learning about ASL and Deaf culture, I've accumulated a variety of online resources. I've presented some of those resources here, and I hope you'll find them useful and interesting.

  • Sign Language Dictionaries
  • ASLWeb - A project of the Michigan State University Communications Technology Lab. Contains a dictionary of several thousand signs with QuickTime movies to demonstrate the signs. This is my favorite ASL dictionary site.
  • HandSpeak - An interactive dictionary of ASL signs and Deaf culture
  • Animated ASL Dictionary - Animated GIF diagrams of some signs.
  • Deaf Culture
  • Mailing Lists
  • The DEAF-L mailing list is a well-established list, gatewayed to Usenet.
  • Deaf mailing lists on Yahoo Groups
  • Books

A full list of books relating to ASL, Deaf Culture and so forth can be found on my Reading List.

  • Other Resources
  • TTYs (teletypewriters) are used for communication by and with Deaf people. Some companies which make TTYs are Ameriphone, Ultratec and Krown Research.
  • Gallaudet University distributes a TrueType font for Windows and Macintosh PCs which allows you to type using the fingerspelling alphabet. You can download it from here.
