Welcome! Welcome to my ASL and Deafness resource page. Here you'll find a variety of things I've accumulated, found and written on the topics of ASL and Deafness. I hope you'll find them useful! Why Did You Write This Page? People have asked me why I wrote this page, why I'm interested in Deaf culture, why I'm learning ASL. After all, I'm not deaf and I don't have a parent, child or sibling who's deaf. So, why do I care? The short answer is that I have a number of friends who are Deaf, and I started learning ASL to be able to communicate well with them. In truth, the answer is much more complex than that. ASL and Deaf culture are inextricably linked, and as I started studying ASL, and spending time with my Deaf friends, I also began learning about Deaf culture. And the more I learned, about both ASL and the cultural identity of the Deaf community, the more drawn to it I was. I'm not even really sure I can explain it, but the language of ASL and the culture of the Deaf community have an expressiveness, a vibrancy to them that I find really appealing for reasons I'm not sure I can really express. All I know is that, to the extent that I as a hearing person am able to do so, I am drawn to that culture and that language. What's Here? On this page, you'll find a variety of resources I've collected as I've learned about ASL and the Deaf community. You'll also find things I've written. I hope you find them enjoyable, informative and useful. |
